Weymouth and Portland prepares for the wind to catch REFRESH 2012
It's the big countdown in the West Country for the Olympic sailing events, and the churches in the Weymouth area have been busy ...
It's great to hear about the work being by the Church in Weymouth and Portland under the REFRESH 2012 banner, providing a wealth of church and community initiatives for the town hosting many of the 2012 Games sailing events.
There are five strands to the REFRESH initiative:
Hubs – five or six churches open near the sea front with cafes, and offering a range of activities including kids clubs, youthwork, fun workshops, evening fringe entertainment and art exhibitions
Bedouin tents – three of these will be inside the Olympic village offering spaces for hospitality, chillout zones with runs, big cushions, music, foot massage and soft drinks
Street work – the local Street Pastors team will be supplemented by others from Yeovil, Gosport and Salisbury and plans are for the Street Pastors programme to run for the whole Olympic season
Camp Refresh – due to huge demand from young people coming with their youth leaders, plus others wanting to come and help, a campsite is being set up for visiting teams
Refresh on the Beach – a major event over the August Bank Holiday (24-27) on the main beach, with a big stage. Andrew Palau will be speaking, bands will play and lots of activities for families including bouncy castles, face painting, sports events, soft play, dance workshops and more will be available for people to join in with
There is also a visit due from YWAM's Next Wave ship from 20 August - 10 September, with mission teams from around the world.
