May 2012 Inspire - 2K Plus - the world comes to London
2K Plus chief exec ADRIAN BARNARD unpacks the story behind the world’s only Christian sports media agency – and its unique role at the 2012 Games
What will you be doing at 7.30pm on Friday 27 July? I will be glued to the TV, along with millions of others around the world, to watch the spectacular Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and hear Her Majesty the Queen, in her Diamond Jubilee year, declare the Games of the 30th Olympiad open.
This summer more than 20,000 members of the world’s media will communicate to an audience of up to five billion people – and among them one group stands out for its unique perspective.
2K Plus International Sports Media is the world’s only Christian sports media agency. We exist to introduce sports fans to Jesus and help others who already follow Jesus to grow in their faith.
In Romans 10:14 the Apostle Paul asks how people can have faith in the Lord and ask him to save them, if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear unless someone tells them?
For the past 20 years 2K Plus has been telling sports fans about Jesus, primarily through radio and increasingly online.
Since the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, our international team of journalists has reported with a Christian perspective from major sporting events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games, FIFA World Cup and the Cricket and Rugby World Cups.
We talk to Christian athletes about their faith, discuss moral, ethical and spiritual issues in sport and report on the many Christian service and outreach activities that take place.
In 2008 at the Games in Beijing we reported for over 1,500 radio stations in seven languages. This year we expect to serve up to 2,000 radio stations in North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australasia. We will be at the Paralympic Games too, reporting on the sport and gathering inspiring stories to share through radio, print and the internet.
We also produce a weekly radio programme, Planet Sport, which is heard on 35 radio stations every week in nine countries. You can download the show from iTunes and listen online at www.planetsport.tv.
During the Olympics this summer we will capture the excitement from London as the capital welcomes athletes and visitors to compete, spectate and share their faith through acts of Christian service and outreach. You can follow us online at www.planetsport.tv as we post news and stories through videos, audio clips and images. This will include a daily, half-hour audio show Planet Sport – The World Comes To London presented by BBC World Service reporter Steve Vickers.
Millions of people around the world who love sport have never heard about Jesus. 2K Plus exists to change that. Join us on the journey and help to make a difference.
