What a great title! Does the book live up to it? It certainly takes a leisurely look at the Apostles Creed. There is real benefit in slowing down and savouring each phrase one at a time. It is rather like chewing your food rather than gulping it down in one go.

I am a member of a non-liturgical church and sometimes find churches that use the liturgy can rattle through the general confession, Lord’s prayer and the Creed, as if the congregation is on autopilot. Sometimes there is value in taking things more slowly so that all the details and their implication sink in.

The author explores the Creed in three distinctive acts: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

This is a brilliant reminder that this trinitarian structure is at the heart of Christian faith. A relationship is at the centre of the universe and the Creed is the affirmation that we have by faith entered into that relationship.

Read this if you have become a little tired of mouthing the liturgy and need something to jump-start your enthusiasm for the God in whom you profess to believe.

“The creed tells us who we are. It reminds us of truths we have forgotten (or would like to forget). It steers us away from mistakes people have made in the past.”
