There is much to commend in this book. It is a careful, wise and theological reflection on the place of biblical prophecy, dreams and visions in the Christian life.

The author helpfully reviews the biblical and theological arguments and provides many practical examples of how contemporary claims of God speaking to people.

Perhaps one of the most helpful things about the book is the willingness to be self-critical by laying out both the potential benefits and pitfalls of prophecy today. The author applies a two-part test of whether such words are genuine; this involves asking two crucial questions:

Would Jesus say this?
Is someone else saying this?

These are wise questions that introduce some vital checks and balances into any claims to be speaking for or hearing from God. The touchstone of biblical revelation and the collective wisdom of the church are the tools by which Christians can foster discernment within the church.

Not everyone will agree with the author’s approach to this subject, but it is hard not to be impressed with the careful, gracious, and thought-provoking manner in which the subject is explored here.
