What a lovely thought-provoking title. They can often be a gimmick; a tantalizing smile without a body, but thankfully that is not the case here.

Nick Tucker offers 12 brief and accessible chapters on the essential nature of God. Reading the book will ruin the children’s song, My God is so big for you, but believe me, the price is worth paying.

The picture of God that is painted here is that of one who is not limited to space and time. This freedom is a great encouragement to believers who are able to trust a God who is unchangingly dependable. The author deals briefly but wisely with objections to some of the things God can’t do, particularly in relationship to change and suffereing.

This book is a welcome combination of biblical reflection, theological understanding, cultural engagement and personal experience. It is good to see such a deep blend of wisdom, human warmth and personal application in this book.

The book includes five interludes that explore how in Jesus, God slept, went to school, appeared, suffered and died alone and was tempted. In these sections the author skilfully weaves references to the early church fathers to wrestle with the mystery of God becoming man.

Highly recommended to any thoughtful Christian. Preachers will be particularly stimulated by the way this topic is handled.
