Michael and Caroline Carroll (Illustrated by Jesus Sotes) – God Made the Dinosaurs

On the day I wrote this review, there was a BBC report of the discovery of a dinosaur skeleton with one of its legs ripped off, surrounded with galactic material consistent with a catastrophic meteor or asteroid strike.
This is one of the issues addressed in this fact-filled and beautifully illustrated book from the Faraday Institute. The authors ask: “Why would God let the dinosaurs die?” A variety of options are offered as is a helpful prayer that reminds us that even when life does not go to plan, we can trust God.
Bible texts are scattered throughout the book and the book begins with an explanation of how the Bible works and a celebration of how the dinosaurs show us how imaginative God is, but I would have liked a little more theological engagement throughout the book
My 10-year-old grandson enjoyed reading the book; he said that he learned a lot of facts and felt that the picture helped him to imagine what the dinosaurs might have looked like.
He particularly liked what was said about guts and organs, because people normally only talk about the bones.
Not every Christian will feel that the science in this book ticks all their boxes, but it is difficult to read this book without a sense of wonder at all that God has made.
“How many are your works, Lord!
In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.”
