This is book is about favouritism and is aimed at 3-6-year-olds. The author takes the story that James tells in the second chapter of his letter and uses it to show how it is wrong to show favour or bias to people based on what they wear or how much they own. The book helpfully relates this story to the many ways that people can show favouritism based on our accent, appearance or colour.

I road-tested this on my six and seven-year-old grandchildren. Our six-year-old granddaughter said: “I liked the bit when Jesus came and sorted everything out and he said I don’t play favourites, but he loves people and he plays fair.”

Our seven-year-old granddaughter said: “I like it because it tells you about all the differences in people, but we are still to choose love.”

The book, which is beautifully illustrated, manages to communicate a huge concept in a simple yet effective way. The Big Wide Welcome is an excellent book to read at a time in history when racism continues to be a challenge and the world is being urged to welcome refugees from Ukraine.
