Let’s be honest about it; there is no silver bullet for effective prayer. I have read a couple of dozen books of prayer in my time but still do not find prayer easy. Why should I add this one to the list?
Firstly, it is honest about why we don’t pray. The first half deals with this topic, in an attempt to overcome our cynicism, hesitancy and reluctance. This is helpful, because it reminds the reader that often we are not desperately waiting to pray more. Rather we are often finding fresh ways to avoid prayer.
Secondly, it provides in the second half of the book simple directions on how to pray. I found the author’s use of the relational aspects of the Lord’s prayer especially useful.
One of the most moving parts of this book is when the author writes about his own father’s regular pattern of prayer, and how he got started on it. This is a beautiful example of the combination of delight and duty that provides a robust model for sustaining daily prayer.
If you want to restore some joyful order into your prayer life, then why not give this a try?
