Dr Ann-Marie Wilson – Overcoming: My Fight against FGM
ISBN 978 1 80030 007 1
This book’s title Overcoming, is a good summary of its contents. This is true in two ways. First this is a book about one woman’s attempt to challenge and overcome the practice of FGM (female genital mutilation).
The author paints an informative picture of the mindset that shaped the practice of FGM, the distress it causes to woman, and the difficulties of trying to disrupt the generational chain that perpetuates the practice.
Anyone who has a “cause,” would do well to read this book. It explains the cost, complexity and challenge of working for change. As REM put it, it is like “pushing an elephant up the stairs.”
Secondly, Overcoming is also an interesting description of the author’s personal narrative. This book is a mixture of biography, CV, Christian testimony, and the pain of navigating life when it gets complicated. The author speaks with clarity about the sting of not fitting in, but helpfully described how each knockback has served as an incentive to get back up again and prevail.
What is the secret of making a difference in the world?
“Review lessons learned and impacts made, successes actioned and challenges overcome, and reflections forged along the path. Then be bold enough to try new things.”
If you want to change the world, read this book. It tells you how hard that can be but always keeps the possibility open.
