The author Wendy Jones has written many best-selling crimes novels and the illustrator has had cartoons published in many places, including The Beano. The author says that two of her publishers are Christian – Books to Treasure and Sarah Grace Publishing. “Whilst I do not write specifically Christian books, they are suitable for any audience.”

This is the second of the Bertie books. Bertie is a blue buffalo from Scotland, whose ambition is to gain a gold medal in the worldwide games. The story looks at the challenge and frustration of not winning at all. Then with a little help from his friends Bertie finally wins a medal in the relay race. For in this team of four friends everyone is a winner.

Our six-year old granddaughter liked the way that his friends joined him in the race, so that he was not alone. Our five-year old granddaughter like the yellow spider and the way it made the web.

The story is fun, Bertie is cute, the illustrations are attractive, and the rhyming text carries the story along well. Our seven-year-old granddaughter was able to read this book to me and only got stuck on a couple of words.

The Bertie books make for some bedtime fun combined with a brief lesson on the value of friendship.
