There is much to commend in this book based on the opening 12 verses of Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount. The author explores the beatitudes as guides for spiritual hill climbing. This is a good and helpful image for reflecting on how to grow in our Christian lives.
There are many books based on the Sermon on the Mount. Why read this one?
Well, the book is personal and practical. Each of the 12 chapters concludes with questions for group study and reflection for personal application of what has been read. This is a really welcome and helpful addition.
The author uses lots of illustrations of what he is writing; this always makes reading a bit easier. Maybe some of these stories are a bit dated, but if you persevere you can’t help but be impressed by the story of the man, the dog and the woman in the lift!
Life on the hill might make an interesting change to our devotional reading – a chapter a day will keep us climbing. It might be a useful book for a men’s group to read together, especially if it is accompanied by a bit of hill walking?
