Holiday at Home available on Daily Hope telephone service

The Daily Hope telephone service – which has provided a lifeline during lockdown for older people – is offering 'holiday at home'' reflections during August.

In normal times, many churches across the country offer ‘Holiday at Home’ type sessions in person for older people who are not able to go on holiday (like the holiday club for over-60s organised in 2015 by Sandylands Methodist Church in Cumbria, pictured below). These happen a range of formats, which for some might include a day trip to the seaside.
Faith in Later Life and Connections at Holy Trinity, Claygate have been working together to prepare a series of seven reflections, which launched on 1 August 2020, for the free Daily Hope telephone service.

Numbers of those ringing the service have now exceeded 200,000 calls and nearly 2.5 million minutes. Many of those ringing in are repeat callers, accessing a range of services.

Throughout August, ‘Holiday at Home on the Phone’ on Daily Hope will give thousands of older people who are still staying at home the opportunity to use their imaginations and memories to take them off to the sea, or the countryside.
There is a different theme each day of the week, but each session contains a poem, reflection, bible verse and a prayer of thanksgiving.

There will be the sounds of seagulls, birdsong, and maybe even the sound of an ice cream van!
Don't forget to ring 0800 804 8044 to try these light-hearted reflections which we hope will bring some relief for those still having to remain at home, in addition to all the other wonderful options on the Daily Hope.
A taster of what to expect from Holiday at Home on the Phone is available on the Church of England SoundCloud page:
Churches are being encouraged to help spread the word of this new material in their communities.
Holiday at Home on the phone will be on option 3 on Daily Hope, which is available 24 hours, 7 days a week free of charge to all UK landlines and mobiles.
