Sports fans from 50 nations are tuning in to quiz – and hear the gospel

More than 17,000 sports fans from around the world are hearing the gospel at Online Sports Quizzes on Friday nights, thanks to a UK Christian sports charity.

For the last month, Christians in Sport have been organising a mass online sports quiz to encourage sportspeople to stay in the lives of their teammates and give them an opportunity to invite friends to hear something of the gospel message.

In early April, 350 teams from 38 countries joined together to play, and by last Friday (1 May) more than 17,000 people from 50 countries were taking part in four rounds of sporting trivia and heard a
short gospel message from Graham Daniels, General Director of Christians in Sport.

Graham commented: “The work of Christians in Sport is more essential now than ever. Sportspeople – whether it’s the 10 million amateurs who compete every week or those playing at an elite level – are in limbo, struggling with what’s going on and asking big questions.

“For 40 years we have existed to reach the world of sport for Christ – equipping Christian sportspeople to live and speak for Jesus – just because sport is off, the mission is not. We sense a real opportunity and a need for people to stick in the lives of their team-mates. The quiz provides a great opportunity to do that as well as give people a chance to invite their friends to hear something of the gospel message at this time.”

For quiz host and Christians in Sport communications team leader Jonny Reid, it’s been an enjoyable way to do mission: “Compiling a quiz every fortnight for teams around the world is a fun challenge but a joyful one to do. Teams seem to be loving spending time together grappling with the different questions and our prayer is that all who watch and play, stay on to listen to the talk and continue conversations afterwards about the good news of Jesus.”

More than 40,000 people usually hear the gospel through CiS guest events each year but despite the lockdown restrictions meaning all organised sport is currently cancelled, thousands are still being reached.
Whilst lockdown in the UK continues, the online quiz will continue as it builds momentum and grows, – the next quiz takes place live on YouTube on Friday 15 May.
