A Seal Upon The Heart: God’s Wisdom and the Meaning of Marriage – A Devotional by Timothy Keller with Kathy Keller

Hodder and Stoughton 379 pages £14.99 ISBN 978 1 473 690056 1

This is the third book of daily readings written by the Kellers, following on from the useful books on the Psalm and biblical wisdom. It’s a little different in that it is built around the theme of marriage, rather than one particular type of biblical genre.  That being the title “A Seal upon my Heart,” a quotation from the Song of Solomon is a nod to that book which is treated extensively in the November and December sections of this book.

The Kellers read the Song as a practical insight into how human relationships work and flourish, without losing sight of the ultimate bride and bridegroom.

The rest of the material here is a combination of fresh reflection on biblical passages that address human relationships, and extracts adapted from another book co-authored by the Kellers: The Meaning of Marriage.  I have always found that book the least accessible Keller book. Here it can be found in daily bite-sized chunks that make it a little easier to digest.

This would be a useful book to give a newly married couple, or to a mature couple in need of a refresher course. Unmarried people would also find it useful to reflect on what the Bible says about being human, sexuality and singleness.
