Tearfund Big Quiz puzzlers 4,000 up on 2018
A total of 26,324 people – enough to fill Old Trafford cricket ground to overflowing – recently took part in the second annual Big Quiz Night this November, raising vital funds for international relief and development charity Tearfund.
Over 4,000 more puzzlers than in 2018 gathered at churches and other venues around the UK, building on the success of last year’s kick-off quiz.
"It’s a lot of fun and brings people together – it encourages people to reconnect with their friends, inside and outside our church, and all for a fantastic cause," said Helen Brecht of St Stephen’s, Twickenham, adding: "As a host, it’s been amazing! The kit that we got from Tearfund had absolutely everything we needed."
Tearfund offered churches and other groups around the UK, and beyond, the ready-made quiz pack to use on Big Quiz Night. The pack made it easy for churches and groups, large or small, to host a stellar night of puzzlement and inspiration. Questions were presented virtually by well-known Tearfund supporters including actor David Gyasi (Carnival Row, Interstellar), baker Martha Collison (The Great British Bake Off) and award-winning chocolatier Will Torrent.
Tearfund’s UK Churches Director Virginia Luckett was thrilled with the outcome: "Last year we had lots of feedback from hosts about the success of the quiz evening, and we also listened to their ideas on how to improve what we offer, to make the evening ran even more smoothly this time round. We’ll keep fine-tuning our quiz pack, because one thing’s for sure: Tearfund’s Big Quiz Night is coming back next year and we’re going to make sure it breaks records again!"
Funds raised will go to help some of the world’s poorest people – like Martha from northern Nigeria who lost her husband, her two older children and her home in a conflict over land in her rural community. Now she and her youngest child live in a makeshift camp for displaced people in the city of Jos, where lack of sanitation recently led to a cholera outbreak. Tearfund’s partner RURCON (Rural Development Counsellors for Christian Churches in Africa) stepped in with water and sanitation workshops which have helped Martha keep safe and healthy, but she still needs counselling to help her cope with her losses.
Spending time with a trained counsellor will make a huge difference to Martha and others like her, ensuring that their trauma doesn’t determine their future possibilities.
The Big Quiz Night will be returning on Saturday 14 November 2020. Hosts can sign up and order next year’s pack at tearfund.org/quiz.
