Thinking of an alternative way to engage in the build up to Christmas? This simple guide takes the journey of Advent in the company of Elizabeth and Zechariah, Mary, Joseph and Jesus. The pattern for each day is to do four things:
At first flush these repetitions can be irritating but their cumulative effect is to develop a habit of mind and heart, that allows the readings to drip feed nourishment into the soul. This little book could prove to be a welcome antidote to the “How many sleeps/shopping days to Christmas?” question.
The writers claim to be inspired by Christian heroes and traditions throughout the centuries. Most of these heroes come from the Contemplative tradition; this might not be your egg nog of choice but it does introduce a few less familiar voices in these advent readings. I found that calling Sunday the Sabbath does grate; the New Testament does not do this; it is the first day of the week or the Lord’s Day.
The book concludes with some questions that could be helpfully used in a weekly group study.
