Edinburgh Fringe: award-winning comedian brings characters to life

Highly rated comedian and Christian Anna Nicholson takes two shows to the Edinburgh Fringe this year: Woman of the Year and Get Happy – both developed with help from BBC comedy writer James Cary (Miranda, My Family), The Play That Goes Wrong director Hannah Sharkey, and the Soho Theatre Young Company.

Woman of the Year is a returning show, which has completed a UK and international tour, winning the Best Comedy Weekly Award at the Adelaide Fringe, and selling out at Edinburgh last year. Get Happy is a new show for 2019, which also features some of the characters from Woman of the Year.

Anna explains: “As a Christian I believe in making theatre and comedy that is light-hearted, clean and that creates a unifying and joyful experience for the audience.

"I aim to make shows with recognisable characters that appeal to a wide-ranging audience and are, above all, funny.

"The shows are not ‘Christian’ shows and are aimed at people of all and no faiths. I hope to provide shows for families and groups visiting Edinburgh Fringe looking for something they will all enjoy, without unnecessary bad language or crude content, but just a brilliant funny experience.”

Woman of the Year is Anna's debut show and is described as "a refreshingly light-hearted and charming character comedy show which celebrates entertaining, endearing and empowered women". A mix of monologue, sketch and song sees the audience introduced to four characters all competing to win the Woman of the Year award.

The characters include unhinged bra saleswoman Denise, Instagram star Bianca offering millennial advice; Reverend Ruth, a vicar with a rival; and Shirley, an elderly woman with a mischievous nature. At the end of the show, the audience vote for their favourite character – and the show has a different ending depending on which character wins.

Get Happy homes in on the increasing commodification of happiness, and delivers a show "full of joy, optimism and hope for finding happiness in the every day". Some characters are new, others featured in Woman of the Year.

Anna adds: "I am so excited to be bringing a second show back to Edinburgh. I aim to make comedy where the characters are familiar to an audience, and will make them laugh their socks off. I also hope the show will cause the audience to appreciate the little things in life that can bring us happiness."
