Mission explosion in Latin America with Christianity Explored
Following consistent efforts to reach Spanish-speaking Latin America, Christianity Explored Ministries (CEM) has announced that 1,250 people have been trained in mission using the Christianity Explored course.
That figure represents an average of 100 evangelists in nine countries: Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Chile.
The Prisoner’s Journey®, a prison adaptation of Christianity Explored delivered in partnership with Prison Fellowship International, is already well established in this region, with nearly 35,000 Latin American prisoners graduating from the programme in 2018 alone.
However, there is also great need and opportunity to reach the general population in these countries. In Uruguay, for example, more than half of its 3.4m residents claim to be Roman Catholics but only about 2% attend mass regularly.
In this latest effort to reach people with the Gospel, Christianity Explored has partnered with Bolivia-based Kep James of SIM to provide evangelistic training and Christianity Explored resources to church pastors. Kep organises many mission conferences across Latin America and manages the overall training programme.
Billy King, from Christianity Explored North America, has already led two major evangelism conferences in the region. The first was in Uruguay’s capital Montevideo, with 30 attendees. The following weekend in Temuco, Chile, 120 people – largely pastors – attended the second conference and all were given the course materials to use in evangelism and church planting.
In October 2019, Billy has been invited to lead two further Christianity Explored training conferences in Colombia – one in Bogota and the other in Cartagena.
The work across these nine countries is already bearing fruit, as 26,000 copies of Mark’s gospel (on which the Christianity Explored course is based) have already been provided for people to give away to their non-Christian contacts in these nations.
Billy said: “One of the tragic distortions of the Gospel that evangelicals face in Latin America is the prosperity gospel. Pastors have told me the Christianity Explored materials are a tremendous help in clarifying the true Gospel.”
