Walter Brueggemann – A Gospel of Hope
Hodder and Stoughton 151 pages £9.99 ISBN 978 1 47988806 9
Walter Brueggemann is a living legend. He is a great biblical scholar with a masterful touch in unfolding Scripture’s core message. For the past three to four decades he has stimulated my thinking and preaching, especially on the Old Testament.
What makes Brueggemann so compelling is his skill in keeping the two horizons of biblical text and contemporary society in view at all points. Christians need help in making the connections and joining the dots in Scripture reading.
The two key words in the title give us a clue to what will follow. Good news that points to an alternative world of hope; as Brueggemann reminds us: “When the truth is told, a new world remains possible.”
This small book brings together fragments from his writings grouped into 12 sections, ranging from Abundance to Faithful Practices. It is useful having these bite-sized pieces of Walt’s wisdom to ponder. This format makes the book a handy volume to dip into from time to time.
Its usefulness might well have been enhanced by an index or some clue to the origin of the various extracts. That being said, the book does provide a hamper full of faith-stretching and sustaining spiritual snacks for the reader. Get dipping!
