Can Science Explain Everything? John C Lennox
The Good Book Company £7.99 127 pages ISBN-10: 1784984116
John Lennox is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, and both a committed Christian and a passionate evangelist. He’s written insightful books on Christianity and science, and taken part in numerous debates on the subject, notably with fellow Oxford Professor Richard Dawkins. This book is a simplified version of God’s Undertaker, the author’s fuller book on this vital subject.
In 10 brief chapters Lennox deals with some complex questions on the relationship between religion and science; and manages to accomplish this task with fresh and simple writing. When I say simple, I do not mean simplistic; I guess you wouldn’t expect an Oxford professor to be simplistic, although Lennox admits that even Oxford dons don’t know everything about everything.
Lennox convincingly establishes that it is possible to be both a Christian and a scientist. He also deals well with how we know what we know, and tests the criteria by which Christians and scientists come to their conclusion about life, God and the universe.
He relates how in his first term at Cambridge University 50 years ago, he was ambushed by professors trying to persuade him to abandon his outdated belief in God. Thankfully, the young John Lennox stuck to his guns, and this book is the fruit of his life-long reflection on the integrity of Christianity in a world that is so often dominated by a materialistic world view.
The book concludes with chapters that explore the reasonableness of Christianity, in which he asserts that like science, the claims of Christianity can be tested.
This would be a useful book to read if preparing talks on this subject, or to give to young people or adults who are seeking to make sense of the claims and counter claims of religion and science.
