Step outside the rush and prepare through Advent
Christians are being encouraged to prepare spiritually for Christmas with free daily readings throughout Advent, received by email with commentary.
How are you expectantly preparing for Jesus this Advent?
From decorating your tree, to buying and wrapping gifts for loved ones, to baking festive treats, there are many ways to prepare for Christmas. However, as Advent begins we should also ensure that we are making time to expectantly prepare our hearts for the celebration of the birth of Jesus and His return at the second coming.
This Advent why not make time each day to focus on studying your Bible by signing up to free daily readings from 2018 edition of Fresh from the Word? Sign up at www.ibraglobal.org to receive a daily email providing commentary.
The advent passages focus on preparing ourselves for Jesus’ birth by looking at the scriptures from prophets including Joel, Micah, Amos and Isaiah, written by Baptist Minister Mark Woods, Anglican Priest Catherine Williams and the Revd Dr Sharm P Thomas – an ordained priest from Bangalore. Methodist Minister Jarel Robinson-Brown draws from the Gospel of Mark.
The lessons are taken from Fresh from the Word 2018, a paperback book offering a daily Bible reading plan for people new or mature in their faith. The daily readings are designed to encourage and inspire your faith, as well as providing prayer prompts and practical ideas for action during this special season.
Roy Littlecott (73), a Methodist believer from Northampton, has been a life-long reader of IBRA’s bible notes and buys the new Fresh from the Word each year. He says: “I view the Bible as my companion in walking with God. I make time at the end of my day when I get into bed to read the Bible, and Fresh from the Word is part of this personal study time. The Bible can be a very confusing book. One can better see its relevance by using a good set of notes alongside the Bible. Fresh from the Word gives me a wide knowledge of the Bible and how it applies to modern life.”
If you are looking for fresh inspiration in the new year, or Christmas gifts for family and friends, why not buy Fresh from the Word 2019 to provide year-long encouragement and guidance in applying the Bible everyday.
Fresh from the Word 2019 provides 365 sets of notes, prayers and suggestions for action on biblical themes for just £9.95. The notes are written by over 50 theologians and biblical scholars; creative and inspirational writers from around the world.
The 2019 notes also address themes such as the power of the word, music in the Bible, fruit of the Spirit and gossip. It takes the Bible to the movies, and to the beach. It also has continuous readings through the books of Luke, Philippians, Psalms, Daniel, Deuteronomy, and Romans 1–8.
This year’s edition features writers from Samoa, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Nigeria, and the Caribbean, as well as Wales, Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, and many other places.
Nathan Eddy, editor of Fresh from the Word, which is published by the International Bible Reading Association (IBRA) comments: “Waiting, stillness, seeking, finding ... In a world that never stops, these simple words invite us to take a step outside the rush. Our mission has always been to encourage faithful people to read the Bible daily, right from the day we first published a reading list of Bible passages more than 135 years ago and encouraged people to form reading groups. We still offer that invitation today. What might come of your time in the desert with the Bible this year? How might it change your life, and the life of your community?”
