Looking up: photographer on next leg of cathedrals project
Australian based author and photographer, John Swainston dropped in to Southwell Minster this week during his tour of UK cathedrals.
John has travelled from Sydney to photograph 19 remaining cathedrals in a project that covers all Anglican English and Welsh cathedrals. He has recorded 27 to this point over the past two years during three prior visits.
The project is titled ‘I will lift mine eyes’ – from Psalm 121 – and will cover 46 cathedrals, two Abbeys and two Royal Peculiars.
He says: “Having grown up in England and sung in many choirs I found my eyes rising up towards the ceiling. Each is so varied that as a photographer I wanted to bring the wonder of these places to others. My visit this April will all but complete the photography. The book will be written through the northern hemisphere summer and I will return for a last photograph to be made in Westminster Abbey in October, when their re-building is concluded.”
