Philippa Hanna - Come Back Fighting
Wow. Punchy, hook-filled songs spanning a welcome breadth from country and roots to reggae and foot-stomping gospel, this is one heck of an album.
Philippa’s voice has always been a wonderful instrument, but this album, largely written in Nashville, sees it teamed up with some beautifully crafted, radio-friendly songs with some real lyrical heft to them, backed by top notch musicianship.
Themes of struggle and suffering, refusal to give up when things get tough, and hunting for that glimmer of faith and hope when all seems lost, permeate this 10-song collection and depict the journey that many of us walk.
Surely this has a great chance of seeing Philippa’s career rocket up to the next level – there are enough top notch songs here to score well on radio as well as on stage, from the defiantly bluesy Come Back Fighting to the uplifting I Saw The Light, the persuasive Do The Unthinkable to the joyously singalong Off The Wagon (watch video right).
Guests include BBC Radio 2 presenter Paul Jones on harmonica, world-champion banjo player John Dowling and a leading UK gospel choir.
There’s even space for a delicately delivered cover of Always On My Mind (famously recorded by Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson and Pet Shop Boys, among others) to close out the album. Real quality, and to these ears the best album she’s produced yet. Buy it.
