If you’re looking for a charming summer read for your child (aged 5+), why not go for the first book from Southwark Cathedral’s resident cat?

Doorkins the Cathedral Cat is the delightfully told and illustrated (and true) book featuring Southwark’s very own furry welcomer. Since turning up on the cathedral’s doorstep one cold December in 2008, stray cat Doorkins (so called because she can be found waiting by the door every morning) has become a permanent fixture and part of the team.

The stories and incidents in the book are all based on actual events with Doorkins at the centre, and there are a couple of pages of photos at the back of the star of the show alongside Her Majesty the Queen, the Dean of Southwark and cathedral staff and in situ around the building.

It’s a charming book with stories engagingly told by Lisa Gutwein, and beautifully illustrated by Rowan Ambrose, both members of the cathedral congregation. Children will be captivated and grown-ups will enjoy reading it with (and to) them.
NB Doorkins has her own Twitter account @DoorkinsM (short for Doorkins Magnificat) with more than 1000 followers.
