Reaching migrants through sport - new resources
Everywhere in Europe people have been asking themselves the question of how to best serve the migrant community which have come into Europe over the past few years ...
In a variety of ways, it has led many to explore the power of sport in reaching across cultures. The European Christian Sports Union (ECSU) has made available a resource called the Migrant Sports Toolkit in order to help churches and individuals love and reach out to the migrants entering into their communities by using the medium of sport and play.
The ECSU is a network which is passionate about using sport as a way to reach people with the gospel. For more than 60 years they have been supporting churches, individuals and organisations use sport and play to help share the gospel with adults, teenager and children.
Nelson Mandela famously said at the Laureus Awards in 2000: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope, where there was once despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination.”
With thousands coming into Europe, to new cultures, new languages, new customs, sport is an unprecedented way to reach out and help integrate them. The ECSU wanted to practically equip churches to do this and the result is the Migrant Sports Toolkit.
The Migrant Sports Toolkit is an online resources library combining proven sports mission concepts with fresh ideas from practitioners all over Europe. It aims to inspire and envision people to utilize the power and potential of sports and play in working with the migrant community. It includes all the training and tools you need to start, and is available without copyright restrictions to any church that is working with migrant communities. The ESCU believes that not only does sport have the power to change the world, but God has the power to change lives.
The Church has a central role to play as it takes up the call to love its neighbours, care for widows and orphans, provide humanitarian aid, and offer hospitality so that fearful individuals, families and communities not only settle well in their new homes, but also have an opportunity to hear about the Good News of Jesus Christ.
