Traidcraft, the UK’s leading fair trade organisation, has opened its first retail outlet store in nearly three decades.

The store, situated on Gateshead’s Team Valley, stocks a wide range of fair trade products from artisans and producers across the developing world, including ethical homewares, toys, jewellery and accessories, as well as a huge selection of fair trade groceries.

The opening also marked the launch of Traidcraft’s biggest-ever marketing campaign, Show You Care, encouraging UK consumers to continue supporting its unique and life-changing work by shopping from its new autumn range of products.

The Right Reverend Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham performed the store’s opening ceremony on Monday (7 September 2015 – see photos).

Bishop Paul said: “I am delighted to have been asked to formally open the Traidcraft fair trade outlet store at its headquarters on the Team Valley. I have always been a keen supporter of the work of Traidcraft in their aim to fight poverty through trade. This is closely matched to one of my priorities for the Diocese on tackling poverty so I am very pleased to be able to offer my support for their Show You Care campaign also.

“The Diocese of Durham has been a Fair Trade Diocese for many years and the work that is done in supporting developing countries is really important. Having Traidcraft plc the UK’s leading fair trade organisation in the Diocese of Durham makes it especially important to be involved.”

Larry Bush, Traidcraft’s Marketing Director, commented: “Show You Care is our message to UK consumers that their support is vital if we are to continue our unique, pioneering work in the developing world. For more than 30 years, we have been at the forefront of the fair trade movement, getting fair trade products into supermarkets and onto the high street. But our job is far from being done, and we want to continue making sure that producers and artisans in some of the world’s poorest nations get a fair deal for the work that they do.

“We’re really excited to be opening our new outlet store, our first one in many years. It helps us mark a really ambitious time at Traidcraft, one where we’re reinvigorating our message that supporting Traidcraft and our amazing work shows you care about real people, people who otherwise would struggle to get by.”

The outlet store complements Traidcraft’s existing online store, www.traidcraftshop.co.uk, as well as sales from Fair Traders and Traidcraft stockists across the country.
