Vulnerable babies in Kenya can look forward to a brighter future thanks to funds raised by sales of the UK's only fair-trade and charitable advent calendar ...
The Funzi and Bodo Trust has benefited from outstanding sales of the Real Advent Calendar. The critical additions of a nurse and community worker will be among the benefits felt by a remote Kenyan island community after the Meaningful Chocolate Company donated £13,754 to the trust following record sales of its calendar.
A team of two will provide 24-hour care for vulnerable babies and their mums. They will also weigh and monitor children and arrange immunisations.
David Marshall, CEO of The Meaningful Chocolate Company, said: "We are very proud producers of the UK’s only Fairtrade charity Advent calendar, sales of which will make a difference to an at-risk community.
"The calendar has also been a means of sharing the Christmas story with tens of thousands. We've seen record sales with schools and churches championing the calendar and we're also delighted to report excellent sales in major Tesco stores."
Ashley Peatfield, CEO of the Funzi Bodo Trust, said: "We are thrilled to receive this donation. Because so many chose to purchase the Real Advent Calendar, lives will be saved – it's that simple.
"The need is especially great as tourism has collapsed in Kenya after terrorist threats led the UK Government to tell tourists to return home. This has left people out of work and unable to feed their families. We have seen a dramatic rise in the numbers of poor and sick people coming to us for help."
