This Harvest, you and your church could do something practical to help lift the world’s neediest families out of poverty. PETER WOODING explains how
Families are everything.
Families are the foundation of civilisations, the oldest institution and the principal system for socialisation.
Healthy families are the core element of healthy societies, but without food, healthcare and education, families find themselves spiralling down in the whirlpool of poverty.
In developing countries across the world, millions of families are in crisis, struggling each day simply to survive.
For sustainable healing to reach into the depths of impoverished civilisations, help must start within the family. Raising healthy, loving families is one of the most effective ways to fight poverty and create strong, stable communities.
Called to demonstrate God’s love by caring for families across the world, and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Samaritan’s Purse developed Raising Families.
Unlike traditional ‘sponsorship’ programmes, Raising Families ensures no long-term dependency on donors; families are taken to a sustainable future within three years.
Sustainability comes through trained volunteers in local churches, working in their communities and with families who ‘pool’ their resources and assets, giving them dignity and cutting dependence and reliance on outside help.
Raising Families enables this journey out of poverty by bringing hope to families in the following ways:
- Ensuring families have shelter
- Planting crops to provide nutritious food
- Providing access to clean, safe water
- Starting a business to generate income and savings
- Providing access to healthcare
- Teaching good hygiene to keep life-threatening disease at bay
- Helping to pay for school fees, uniforms, supplies and transport to school
- Enabling fellowship and prayer support
The beauty of Raising Families together
In 2011, Sarah and her three young children were forced to move into the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, after being abandoned by her husband.
Left with nothing, Sarah was desperate for money as she fought for her family’s survival. Hungry, hurting and neglected, Sarah began walking miles to collect firewood that she could sell to provide for her family’s basic needs.
Collecting firewood in this way is illegal in Kenya. Despite this, and despite being arrested for doing so, a hopeless Sarah continued to collect firewood, which took her deep into the forest – a place where vulnerable women are often attacked and raped.
Then local church volunteers, trained by Samaritan’s Purse, entered Sarah and her family’s lives.
Through Raising Families, Sarah’s children were able to return to school and receive nutritious food. With hopes of starting her own hotel business, Sarah joined a savings and loans group to save what money she could.
She and her family continue to attend church regularly, allowing God to play a vital role in their lives.
Sarah is grateful for the empowerment she has received with the help of Raising Families. “I am very thankful to the programme and the volunteers of the church. They are a real encouragement to me.”
Currently, Samaritan’s Purse is equipping local churches across 12 countries, enabling more than 30,000 families like Sarah’s to have hope and a future.
Samaritan’s Purse is urging Christians across the UK to model the early church, known in the book of Acts for pooling their resources together, and become a driving force for change in the lives of the world’s neediest families.
Churches can reflect the giving, serving and adoptive nature of God by demonstrating care and compassion to the broken families around the world.
Through Raising Families, the body of Christ can enable families to be the answer to their own problems, to find a brighter future for themselves, their children, their communities and their nations.
