South Africa: Shaping young lives and building futures

How the Christian non-profit organisation RealStart is making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged young people

How the Christian non-profit organisation RealStart is making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged young people

RealStart passionately cares about the future of high-quality disadvantaged young people. Through a year-long programme it aims to use the best possible means to change their lives, set their vocational course and enable them to become positive role-models and change agents within South Africa.

RealStart focuses on the holistic development (physical, mental, spiritual and emotional) of students and on career enablement.

During the first six months of the year, students attend discussions on a wide range of topics designed to develop them to make a success of their lives.

They are also exposed to “broadened horizons” experiences that include adventure activities, business skills, art lessons, public speaking and serving others in impoverished communities.

At the end of the first six months each student is professionally assessed to see where their strengths lie and are then streamed into one of three categories.

Tertiary education is the stream for students who want to go on to university or college.  RealStart assists students with the application process and finding bursaries.

The apprenticeships stream helps students who want to start working to find apprenticeships which match their abilities and interests.

The third stream is for entrepreneurial students. RealStart assists students to develop the necessary skills and to find the start up capital.

RealStart says it has a 90% success rate in helping students change their lives and pursue well-suited careers. They have big plans for the future and aim to develop a national footprint, so young people across South Africa caught in poverty, can be enabled to be what God called them to be.
