Among the attractions was the famous mate (mat tay), a national drink that is taken to most people in flasks and small clay pots, and which can only be described as 'grass-looking' in appearance.

The Cumbria District is approaching its 10-year anniversary with the Argentina Methodist Church (IEMA – Iglesia Evangélica Metodista Argentina) and a number of people have visited the country and developed partnerships links. Visits have included women’s conferences, young adult conferences, and trips to orphanages that the district support as well as areas of great deprivation in places such as La Boca in central Buenos Aires .

In October 2014, Jonny Gios, Matt Severn, Jess Tweedie from the Cumbria District spent 10 days touring Argentina, building links with IEMA and visiting orphanages. The main focus of the visit was to attend the young adult conference that happens every four years. Last year it took place in Cordoba which was 10 hours from Buenos Aires by coach.

"A fantastic conference, that was so inspiring it could be a reality in Cumbria one day,”said Jonny, youth and community worker at Sandylands Methodist church.

Joan Wager – who is the district link person for the partnership, interviewed Irene Mckay during the evening, who gave a moving account of her experience, with the emphasis on the God who crosses all cultures and languages, and the fellowship she enjoyed whilst there. The evening was packed with worship, prayer for the partnership, videos, interviews and a tasting experience of the food we sampled in Argentina.

The hope for the future of the partnership is to see young adults visit Cumbria next year!
