A Hindi version of a discipleship course for new Christians developed by church resources specialists CPO has been launched in India, with future plans to develop a Punjabi version too.

The Life Course, written by Baptist pastor Rev Graham Jefferson (right), has been used by churches in the UK for many years, and consists of 15 interactive Bible studies aimed at those who wouldn't normally be enthusiastic readers.

"When I first wrote the Life Bible Course, it was so encouraging to see the way churches of all denominations in the UK used it not only to bring many to Christ, but also to introduce them to the basics of the Christian life," explains Graham. "I never imagined that one day, this course would serve the same purpose in India, or that it would be so enthusiastically received by so many Indian pastors."

The link with India came about through UK-based businessman Raman Justine (left), who worked with CPO and the Indian Bible Society to see the course translated into Hindi, and Graham flew out to Delhi recently for a launch event with 300 churches represented.

Worship was led by Subhash Gill, pastor at Morning Star Church, Forest Gate, and there was a glowing testimony to the course's effectiveness given by Elim pastor Steve Derbyshire (below right), who leads the large City Gates Church in Ilford. "I can tell the people who have done it and those who haven't!" he said.

Graham, who for many years was senior pastor New Life Church, Worthing, developed the course following his experiences working in London.

"We needed something simple, and in plain English. Once someone came to know Jesus, there was a need for a basic discipleship course. We wanted it to be interactive, with answers to fill in, and all the questions – which send the reader to Bible verses each time – to be obvious. We also designed it to work with all popular Bible translations."

Illustrated by cartoonist Bob Bond, the Life Course became a popular and accessible way to introduce people to the Christian faith and teach the basics of living the Christian life, and has had a number of design revisions over the years.

Future plans include a leader's guide, and seminars for Indian church leaders to learn how to run the course.
