Come the small hours of Friday and Saturday when most of us are safely tucked up in our beds, Allan Cockayne is to be found walking the streets of Nottingham city centre.

His task as a street pastor is to look out for revellers and help them get home safely.

“We provide support such as reassurance, help with arranging transport, care whilst out late at night and flip-flops and water for people under the influence of alcohol,” explains Allan, a grandfather.  “My main challenge is to make sure peace is kept.”

He adds: “My greatest joy, which I try to spread, is that Jesus is always with us and watching over us to get home safely and he loves us all – and knowing that street pastors are all over the world.”

Joanne Cox-Brown who co-ordinates Nottingham Street Pastors and nominated Allan for an Inspiring Individual Award, says he is “an ongoing inspiration to the team and all who know him.

“He regularly serves from 10pm to 3am, caring for young people in the city, many of whom are intoxicated, lost, lonely, upset, homeless or just partying people. He regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty and steps in at the last minute if teams are short of people.

“He is kind, gentle and encouraging to all he meets, both out on the street and in his team. He oozes the compassion of Christ.”

Though Allan works full time at the City Hospital, Joanne says he always has time to care for other people and is reliable and dependable.

“This speaks volumes to young Christian men, many of whom in our team look up to him. Allan is a model man and father figure when so many young people don't have that in their lives.

“He inspires other Christians to serve their community and gently encourages those around him to serve too. He should win an award for his faithfulness in service to Christ which is a total inspiration to those who know him.”
