Scottish church leaders unite against Trident
The Right Reverend Alan McDonald, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of
Scotland, will travel to London to present a petition of over 20,000 signatures to the Ministry of Defence tomorrow (Friday).Together with the Most Reverend Idris Jones of the Scottish Episcopal Church and Richard McCready of the Scottish Catholic Church, the Moderator will present the petition which calls for the Government not to invest in a replacement for Trident, and to begin the process of decommissioning these weapons with the funds spent on nuclear weaponry to be diverted to aid and development projects.
The Moderator is a fierce opponent of nuclear weapons and this petition follows in the footsteps of The Long Walk For Peace in September when religious leaders, campaigners and trade union activists joined him on an epic 85-mile cross country walk from Faslane to the Scottish Parliament to highlight the nuclear weapons issue.
"The statistics about Trident are chilling," said Mr McDonald. "One Trident submarine can carry the equivelant of 750 Hiroshima bombs. The potential for indiscriminate destruction of countless men, women and children is almost beyond belief."
