Scottish church leaders to deliver Trident peace message
The Rt Rev Alan McDonald, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, will travel to London on December 1 to present a petition of over 20,000 signatures to the Ministry of Defence.Together with the Most Rev Idris Jones of the Scottish Episcopal Church and Richard McCready of the Scottish Catholic Church, the Moderator will present the petition which calls for the government not to invest in a replacement for the Trident nuclear missile, and to begin the process of decommissioning these weapons. It also requests that the funds spent on nuclear weaponry will be diverted to aid and development projects.
The Moderator is a fierce opponent of nuclear weapons and this petition follows in the footsteps of The Long Walk For Peace in September when religious leaders, campaigners and trade union activists joined him on an epic 85 mile cross country walk from Faslane to the Scottish Parliament to highlight the nuclear weapons issue.
