Faith groups say 'No!' to Manchester super-casino
The Faith Network for Manchester (FN4M), a forum that unites people from all faith communities across Manchester, has published an open letter opposing the location of the proposed super-casino.
The Faith Network fully supports regeneration for the city but feels the super-casino will be counter-productive.
They believe the city council’s claim that there will be 2,700 jobs created is misleading, as most will be short-term construction jobs and many will be low paid and unskilled.
FN4M also believe that there has not been full or open consultation as to whether the people of East Manchester, or Manchester more generally want a super-casino development.
“We urge the Government to listen to the views and, indeed, needs of the ordinary people of Manchester. When the matter comes before Parliament, we encourage all MPs and Peers to revoke the decision to build the proposed super-casino in Manchester.”
Manchester City Council’s bid made reference to having consulted the Greater Manchester Faith leaders regarding the socially responsible gambling proposals – but failed to make any reference to the Faith Leaders’ opposition to the bid itself. In so doing the FN4M feels that the faith community’s views have been misrepresented.
