An event for everyone interested in theatre and the basic issue for every Christian - how faith can be and has been communicated in a secular environment. Did for instance JCS communicate faith, and if so, what kind?

These are the main reasons to find yourself at this event: Britain’s foremost theatre critic joins ACG’s Tony Jasper in conversation at a special ACG event to discuss the relation of faith and theatre. Mlchael writes in the Guardian and on several occasions he has asked why there is so little radical religious writing for the stage. We will discuss this, as well as looking again at JCS (back this summer in London) Godspell, Hair, Jerry Springer, Howard Brenton (Play on Paul at the National), Sarah Kane.

There will be a playreading by professional actors of the ACG winning play 'Jesus in the broomcupboard' by John Coutts who has strong connections with the Salvation Army.

Finally controversial and stimulating Methodist Peter Moreton, will deliver the ACG lecture: 'Faith in Theatre.’

Your views and thoughts will also be given space.

What role can faith communities play in creating a sustainable economy? At the Big Workshop we’ll be exploring that question, and working together to build a faith-led movement for a new economy.

At the big workshop we will; Explore a Christian vision for human flourishing within natural limits. Test-drive the new learning guide for church groups that we are developing. Build alliances with other organisations. Meet individuals with an interest in a fair and sustainable economy, and those ready to help build a movement for change.

A suggested donation of £25 is requested from participants to help cover costs. A sandwich lunch will be provided, plus tea and coffee.

The Big Workshop is part of Green Christian’s Joy in Enough initiative.

At 10am, before the Big Workshop begins, you are invited to the Annual Members’ Meeting of Green Christian – non-members very welcome.

In preparation for the HOPE Year of Mission in 2018, HOPE and Cell UK are offering a training morning to empower churches and individuals who are seeking to take the opportunity to be a part of this amazing church-wide initiative.

Roy Crowne, the Director of HOPE, and Laurence Singlehurst, who is involved in both Hope and Cell UK, will run three sessions on Saturday 18th November, starting at 10am and finishing at 1pm.

This training will be held in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, and will cost £20 per person.

Session 1 Where we are now, and the challenges that face us.

Session 2 Conversation and content – how can we have more confidence to share our faith, what kind of language and words do we need and how should we deliver them.

Session 3 Opportunities created by having a ‘rhythm of mission’, and how church events and individuals can work together, building mission through personal relationships.

During these sessions, Roy and Laurence will cover the following topics:

Exploring what God has been doing: the amazing favour that the church has in the UK, which is the result of the social action and good works the church has been undertaking, and the missional initiatives that have historically taken place.

Reflecting on the challenge that now faces the church: research shows that even though 64% of the public know a Christian and like them, when it comes to sharing the content of the Christian message and to sharing our faith through words there is a significant challenge as to how we do that in a way that touches people’s hearts and makes a difference.

Also reflecting on how the Hope Year of Mission in 2018 is not planned as a ‘standalone’ year, instead it is planned as something on which churches can build a ‘rhythm of mission’ year on year. Church members can connect into that rhythm of mission in terms of their relationships, friendships and good works, to help people find faith.

In the 19th century, Max Weber published The Protestant Work Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, which linked Protestantism and Capitalism in the public's mind. As we look to a future where the role of work in life may change dramatically as a function of artificial intelligence, outsourcing, robotics and the 'gig' economy, this panel discussion will focus on the role of work in our lives and our search for meaning in the 21st century. It will also touch on how these changes may affect capitalism. This discussion is part of the St Paul's Cathedral series on the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Speakers Include: Richard Sennett, Professor of Sociology, London School of Economics Nicholas Srnicek, Lecturer in the Digital Economy, Kings College London Eve Poole, Lecturer, Ashridge Business School and Associate, St Paul's Institute Moderator: Barbara Ridpath, Director, St Paul's Institute

St Silas Church, Blackburn

View on map

There will be a very special visitor to the Diocese of Blackburn on Tuesday 19 September.

Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, comes to St Silas Parish Church in Blackburn to talk about his life and work in the Christian Faith.

Dr Williams, now a Life Baron in the House of Lords as Baron Williams of Oystermouth since 2013, resigned his position of Archbishop of Canterbury in 2010 after 10 years in the post, to become Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Although, in general, his theology is orthodox, and nurtured by anglo-Catholicism, he has been regarded by some as a radical; he has been a strong advocate for women Bishops and has supported a more accepting attitude to LGBT people and priests in the Church.

He speaks or reads several languages, including Russian (learnt in 6 months!) and is married to Jane, a lecturer in theology, daughter of the Rt Rev Geoffrey Paul, former Bishop of Bradford and a highly respected evangelical leader.

We hope many clergy and members of all faiths in Blackburn and Lancashire will want to meet him and hear him speak; tea, coffee and cakes will be served after his talk, and tickets are available at £10 each from our website, www.stsilasorgan.org.uk by phone at 01254 54991 (Carole); 01772 312678 (Jean) by email stsilasorganfund@email.com

Curating Pioneering Worship & Liturgy

02 December 2017

St Patrick's Church

View on map

A one day conference for anyone interested in creative forms of worship across a wide variety of traditions. Curating is a wonderfully different way to think about worship, especially for those involved in leading acts of worship on a regular basis. A curator shapes and oversees in order to help the participants experience something and in the context of worship we hope that the experience will reveal something of God. At Beyond we call this 'creating opportunities for epiphany' - moments when God breaks in, often in ways that we had not planned. This conference brings together practitioners who reflect the breadth of tradition in the church, each bringing their own understanding and perspective into this mystical process. The day will be ideal for anyone looking for insights into their own liturgical practice or ideas to use in their own context. It is especially tailored for those in training and for clergy who are looking for inspiration to take back to their churches but is open to anyone with an interest in ritual, innovation and re-imagining.

This is the fifth year of our Tearfund Scotland Christmas Tour, and we'd love you to join us for some inspiring Christmas carols and original Christmas songs.

A great line up of Scotland’s finest Christian singer-songwriters and musicians - Yvonne Lyon, Allan McKinlay, Ellyn Oliver and David Lyon - will welcome in this season of Advent.

Each performance will help to raise money for Tearfund’s partners, bringing hope to poor communities throughout the world. We look forward to seeing you.

The multi award winning Angie Le Mar, best known as Britain's leading comedienne, also known for her hit plays, The Brother, Funny Black Women on the Edge, Do you know where your daughter is? And Forty.

This Gospel Musical play is an emotional roller coaster. Sunday School is where the friendship between Andrea and Patricia started, but when it came to an end, life took over. Dreams were broken and heartaches grew. Even through the brokenness and disappointments, they never forgot who they were and whose they were.

Take Me Back will take you back in time. The songs, the joy and the laughter will bring you back down memory lane.

Tickets: £15

Where adventure begins, family is far from simple...

Brace yourselves as bold church leaders plunge headlong into the dizzy world of young discipleship. Gasp as perplexed parents hang on for the white-knuckle ride of the teenage years. Thrill in amazement as overworked, relentlessly positive Youth Worker, Ryan, negotiates a string of minor disasters on the famous camping trip to Wales. And what of Winston the cat’s role in family prayers?

Meet Jake, Jasmine and Ellie as they re-live their childhood and teenage experiences of Christian faith at home and at church.

Nobody knows how it will turn out, but everyone’s agreed that we need to keep together on the adventure of faith.

In a brilliantly entertaining show – real, touching, hilarious – Riding Lights create an unmissable piece of theatre to deepen our understanding of ‘family’.

Pilgrimage into Mission Conference

03 February 2018

Norwich Cathedral

The international surge in popularity of pilgrimage creates significant opportunities in mission for local parishes. Is your church along the route of an ancient pilgrimage or modern long-distance path? Is it associated with a local saint or holy person, or was it the home of a local shrine or holy well? Do you have treasures you long to share with others? The combination of heritage and holiness is a powerful draw for contemporary people and provides an ideal context in which to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

The cost of the training day is £15 per person and includes a light lunch.
