Calling all those interested in local, sustainable food. Wymondham Abbey is putting on an exciting Food and Drink Festival on Saturday, September 23.

There will be local producers, demonstrations, veg-tertainment from Madame Zucchini, and the Abbey’s popular pop-up cafe.

Timed to coincide with the church’s annual Harvest Festival celebrations, the festival runs from 10am to 3pm. As more people consider the ethics and environmental impact of the food we eat, the emphasis will be on vegetarian and vegan food, along with ways you can eat well and look after our environment.

The Festival will have a number of activities designed to make it a really fun day out for all the family. Vette’s Veggie Van will be serving delicious food all day, Mooilicious will be serving ice cream and yoghurt, and stalls will be selling a wide variety of food. There’ll be beer, cider, chocolate, chutneys and much more. Among the children’s activities there will be a bouncy castle and face painting.

September is the time when all keen gardeners are harvesting the fruits of their labours. The Abbey organisers are looking for the best fruit and vegetables in Wymondham. This will be a fun competition, open to anyone who enjoys growing vegetables.

There’s also a cake making contest. This will be a fun event for children and young adults who enjoy baking, or maybe want to try their hand at it for the first time. Entries can be any type of cake or biscuit, large or small. Make them at home and bring them along. Entries will be split into two groups - up to age 13, and ages 14 – 21.

For more details about both these competitions, or any other aspect of the festival, ring Esther Prendergrast in the Abbey office t. 01953 607062 or e-mail learningandevents@wymondhamabbey.org.uk.

Integral Mission Forum

Exploring the foundations and practice of Integral Mission In the 20th Century, the Church faced a number of divisive issues and one of these was the liberal vs. evangelical understanding of the 'good news of Jesus'. The debate was between those who focused on the gospel being physical good news for life on earth and those who focused on the gospel as spiritual good news for the after-life: should we act or proclaim the gospel? Integral mission sought to bring both of those aspects back together into a more holistic understanding and practice of mission. But how far have we really achieved this? This debate and the accusation that relief and development agencies are no different to their secular counterparts rumble on.

In this forum, Dr Chris Wright, will be sharing with us a biblical understanding of God's mission, and the implications of this for how we join in with God's mission. We will also explore how our understanding of 'Integral mission' has changed and developed in the last two decades, and to what extent this has impacted on our practice.

If you want to understand more about integral mission and to work through what this looks like in our communities and mission and aid responses, this forum will be a great opportunity to do that. Join us to share your experiences and ask your challenging questions as together we attempt to navigate a way forward.

The event starts promptly at 11:00am (10:30am for refreshments) and finishes at 4:00pm.

The cost is £20 to people from GC member agencies and churches. Cost for non GC members is £50. Refreshments and lunch are included in the price.

The Hope Deferred Retreat has been organised specifically to encourage couples to trust God in the midst of infertility and infant loss, and to provide a safe and loving environment where issues can be discussed and prayed for. It is also for those whose loss is still a daily battle and also for those whose grief has changed shape as the years have passed.

The Retreat will be a weekend to which you can bring your struggles, burdens, questions and disappointment. It will be a time to share stories, pray together, listen to God's word and be supported. It will be a chance to meet others who have undergone similar experiences. We will have good food and plenty of opportunities to chat and relax. We will look at dealing with grief and anger, discuss the different struggles men & women often separately face and how hope fits in to a future that we never imagined we would be facing.

You will not be expected to share anything you would rather not, nor will you be given a jam-packed programme of activities. We want you to leave the Retreat refreshed and with a renewed hope for the future.

Salhouse Baptist Church is holding a quiz with fish and chips event on Saturday 30 September in aid of Christian charity Caring for Life which provides help for vulnerable adults who fall through the social system.

This is an annual event run by Salhouse Baptist church to raise money for the Leeds-based charity Caring for Life. The charity shares the love of Jesus with vulnerable adults by offering compassionate, consistent care for those who have “slipped through the net,” Caring For Life provides homes, support in the community and therapeutic daytime activities. Many of the people they work with have known only abuse in childhood.

Pastor Simon Gay said of the charity, "It’s quite an amazing setup which has been going for 30 years, and they promise to care for individuals for life – which is quite a commitment."

All are welcome to come to this event - as a team or on your own and you can join a team. Tickets £8.50

Reaching diverse communities with the gospel - releasing diverse communities to share the gospel

We live in a multicultural age - no longer do we have to travel across the globe to meet people who are different to us - diversity is seen in every city street. As Christians, our call is to take the one gospel to these many cultures - it's an exciting task but it can be a daunting one as well.

The cross-cultural mission track will build on the many years of expertise the church has gained in overseas mission and show how we can use the best of those principles in reaching out to people on our doorstep. It will tap into the shared expertise of Global Connections, South Asian Concern, the Evangelical Alliance and London City Mission and, using a combination of teaching, interview, testimony and panel discussions, will illustrate how we can all be involved in helping people from all backgrounds to come to Christ and grow in Christ.

We will hear from people who are reaching out to those from other cultures and in the process re-orientating their hearts to love with new priorities, relating to others in new ways and re-telling the gospel story for new ears. We will hear testimonies from people who have become Christians from the background of other religions. And through case studies we will spur one another on to faithful, fruitful fellowship in churches that ever more value the many cultural expressions of Christianity that make up the global body of Christ.

Speakers include: Anna Bishop, Hirpo Kumbi, Manoj Raithatha, Helen Thorne amongst others

Peterborough today is thriving. It’s a regional centre for business, industry, transport, culture and leisure, and is growing rapidly to meet the demand for new houses. It’s also home to many different cultures and ethnic groups. However the homeless problem is growing. In 2010 there were more rough sleepers in the city than any other outside London. More recently the local authority has had to find savings of £24M for the financial year 2015 which is making the situation worse. Moreover Peterborough has a prison with over 1000 inmates and in 2010 over 400 prisoners left the prison with no fixed abode.

Sample a small taste of what it might be like to be homeless. Raise money and awareness of the struggles the homeless face.

It was Bukowski that said, “What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.” A band on the verge of releasing their 10th album can relate. With their 10th studio album, SWITCHFOOT asks a question that few bands ever come to: “After nine albums together, what’s worth holding on to and what’s worth letting go?” Needless to say, only the most poignant songs survived the recording process. “We want these songs to be like a knife that cuts through the darkness,” Foreman said. Even with the weighty themes of “The Day That I Found God” or “If The House Burns Down Tonight,” the album maintains it’s life, its light, its vibrant spark, concluding with the bold punctuation, “Hope is the Anthem.” The unapologetic writing has always led the band forward, sometimes uncomfortably. The irony is that even while pop culture has embraced SWITCHFOOT from time to time, SWITCHFOOT has never fully been accepted. They’ve never been cool, and they’ve never cared. It might be the secret to their longevity. The title track on The Beautiful Letdown says it all, “I don’t belong here, I don’t belong. I will carry a cross and a song where I don’t belong.” The song continues indeed, to a bold tenth record.

What happens when followers of Jesus who have been fostering life giving roots in their neighbourhood begin weaving connective links with one another across places? Encouragement happens... Collaboration happens… Transformation happens. A Movement Begins!

Are you a ministry or community leader that wants to grow the fabric of love and care in the neighbourhood? Join hundreds of practitioners for the 4th annual New Parish Conference.

The airwaves tell the stories of political upheaval and religious decline... But, something incredible is happening on the ground! Join together with hundreds of practitioners across the UK, and around the world, for the 4th annual New Parish Conference...

We know there are thousands of churches, groups, and individuals committed to growing faithful presence in, with, and for their neighbourhood. But, often their work has been seen as insignificant by a church and world that is looking for the big, the fast, and the entertaining.

But, here’s the exciting news! Something quite profound happens when these groups begin connecting together. There is a power in sharing our stories and gaining a glimpse of what God is doing all across our land.

Event runs from 9.30am 9 November to 4.30pm 10 November

In preparation for the HOPE Year of Mission in 2018, HOPE and Cell UK are offering a training morning to empower churches and individuals who are seeking to take the opportunity to be a part of this amazing church-wide initiative.

Roy Crowne, the Director of HOPE, and Laurence Singlehurst, who is involved in both Hope and Cell UK, will run three sessions on Saturday 18th November, starting at 10am and finishing at 1pm.

This training will be held in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, and will cost £20 per person.

Session 1 Where we are now, and the challenges that face us.

Session 2 Conversation and content – how can we have more confidence to share our faith, what kind of language and words do we need and how should we deliver them.

Session 3 Opportunities created by having a ‘rhythm of mission’, and how church events and individuals can work together, building mission through personal relationships.

During these sessions, Roy and Laurence will cover the following topics:

Exploring what God has been doing: the amazing favour that the church has in the UK, which is the result of the social action and good works the church has been undertaking, and the missional initiatives that have historically taken place.

Reflecting on the challenge that now faces the church: research shows that even though 64% of the public know a Christian and like them, when it comes to sharing the content of the Christian message and to sharing our faith through words there is a significant challenge as to how we do that in a way that touches people’s hearts and makes a difference.

Also reflecting on how the Hope Year of Mission in 2018 is not planned as a ‘standalone’ year, instead it is planned as something on which churches can build a ‘rhythm of mission’ year on year. Church members can connect into that rhythm of mission in terms of their relationships, friendships and good works, to help people find faith.

There are many arenas of life and in each one men will face uncertainties or difficulties that can test our integrity, resilience and character. But God has called us to live our lives with perseverance, to run the race set before us and to run to win.

Brand new this autumn, 'In the Arena' is a mens event where we will share with you helpful strategies to strengthen and empower you. Discover the importance of preparation and training that enables you to survive the tough times that can affect your most important relationships, work and inner or spiritual life.

Join Philip Jinadu and Gerrit Bantjes as they explore practical drills that will help you through everyday life.

There will be a very special visitor to the Diocese of Blackburn on Tuesday 19 September.

Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, comes to St Silas Parish Church in Blackburn to talk about his life and work in the Christian Faith.

Dr Williams, now a Life Baron in the House of Lords as Baron Williams of Oystermouth since 2013, resigned his position of Archbishop of Canterbury in 2010 after 10 years in the post, to become Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Although, in general, his theology is orthodox, and nurtured by anglo-Catholicism, he has been regarded by some as a radical; he has been a strong advocate for women Bishops and has supported a more accepting attitude to LGBT people and priests in the Church.

He speaks or reads several languages, including Russian (learnt in 6 months!) and is married to Jane, a lecturer in theology, daughter of the Rt Rev Geoffrey Paul, former Bishop of Bradford and a highly respected evangelical leader.

We hope many clergy and members of all faiths in Blackburn and Lancashire will want to meet him and hear him speak; tea, coffee and cakes will be served after his talk, and tickets are available at £10 each from our website, www.stsilasorgan.org.uk by phone at 01254 54991 (Carole); 01772 312678 (Jean) by email stsilasorganfund@email.com

Where adventure begins, family is far from simple...

Brace yourselves as bold church leaders plunge headlong into the dizzy world of young discipleship. Gasp as perplexed parents hang on for the white-knuckle ride of the teenage years. Thrill in amazement as overworked, relentlessly positive Youth Worker, Ryan, negotiates a string of minor disasters on the famous camping trip to Wales. And what of Winston the cat’s role in family prayers?

Meet Jake, Jasmine and Ellie as they re-live their childhood and teenage experiences of Christian faith at home and at church.

Nobody knows how it will turn out, but everyone’s agreed that we need to keep together on the adventure of faith.

In a brilliantly entertaining show – real, touching, hilarious – Riding Lights create an unmissable piece of theatre to deepen our understanding of ‘family’.

Tickets £10
