The Noise Bristol - July August 2010 - Action

More than 460 volunteers from over 25 churches rolled up their sleeves over the May Bank Holiday weekend to take part in The Noise – a chance to serve their local communities and have a little bit of fun, too

Mural painting, clearing gardens, collecting more than 19 tonnes of rubbish and running a football tournament were just some of the ways local churches showed God’s love to the urban estates across North Bristol in May.

“It was an incredible weekend of hard work and fun,” reported Stewart North, Project Organiser of The Noise, an annual Bank Holiday weekend event which has been running for the last nine years. “It was great to see hundreds of local residents out enjoying all that was on offer, especially the free family fun events.”

More than 60 projects, which were suggested by people who live and work in the area, were completed over the three days.

Volunteers wielded paintbrushes and garden tools, ran five family fun events and  community barbecues. At Ebenezer Church, Horfield and the United Reformed Church in Southmead, more than 100 senior citizens enjoyed a three-course Sunday dinner.

And their efforts made a huge impact. One local resident wrote: “I just wanted to say thanks for clearing the tennis court area in my road in Sea Mills today. I am not a churchgoer, but I can say that your practical outreach in your community serves your cause well and has much more impact than hiding in a church building.”

New relationships were forged with families as well as with the council, police, schools and local organisations.

“Already the key partnerships churches have had requests for new involvement in schools,” said Stewart.

“It has also been exciting to see a lot of possibilities of The Noise project starting around other areas in Bristol, at different times throughout the year.”

The Noise 2011 runs from 30 April to 2 May next year.  For further details go to
